A chill ran through my body, and I couldn't say a word. I just let him talk, mesmerized by his words, not wanting to interrupt any part of his story.
I never saw the old man after that day. I didn't even catch his name and I don't guess he ever said it, but I feel deeply privileged to have met him and that I was there to listen. I am sure he has moved on by now, and I am sure his journey home was with angels. Red, The old timers have such interesting stories to tell if we just take the time to listen.
I love to hear my Grandma tell tales from when she was a young girl and her early married life. She has a great story about the house where she still lives today by herself at age 92 of when her and my pap first moved in. It is a two story, and apparently, they use to keep chickens in the upstairs of the house and lived on the first floor.
She said it took quite a lot of work to clean out and redo before they could live there!

It was a kind deed that you did for the old gentleman, to take the time to show him the barn and to listen to his story! This is pretty cool. I love old barns and old stories from ol timers.
What a blessing you got to be a part of his story. I know I often wonder about the story behind old, dilapidated homes or barns We know they all have a story to tell, but few of us ever get to hear that story. What a privilege for you. And welcome to Grit.
I'm pretty new myself. Hi Red I love your story -it was so nice of you to stop what you were doing and help him relive his memories. It's funny how you might think the barn was in this spot but your not quite there. Being a self-sufficient farm some of these animals were also a supply of meat…. William Garriott provided for many family members, he had twelve younger siblings.
One of his younger brothers, John, had the ability to negotiate disputes. When John unexpectedly died, the family buried him in the barn to hide his death from the Indians. They hoped to maintain peace by keeping it a secret.
One of the larger corner foundation stones is engraved with his name. This barn was strategically located along the New Harmony to Mt. Vernon stagecoach route of The old farm is surrounded by the beautiful rolling countryside of southwest Indiana very near Big Creek and the Wabash River.
An artist friend and I headed north very early this morning. Our destination was a lovely old barn in Noble County. We arrived just before the early feeding of the many rescued and boarded horses.
The farm owner, Beth, took us into her new pole barn to meet the horses and talk while she fed them and then she opened their access doors to the pasture. I thought "This is just great stuff. The world you have no clue about. It has dawned on me over the years how that barn attracts all kinds of people.
But the ones who have always surprised me are the mothers. They come to the barn with their kids because they want their kids to experience it, but they are the ones who fall in love with it. Sometimes the most unlikely people will just love to come. I had one woman who came with her kids and she was wearing scarves and bangles and [dressed in anything except barn clothes]. She fell in love with the smell and the horses and pretty soon she was doing chores.
One summer we had a movie crew who wanted to use the farm as a location for a movie they were doing. No one in Galway was supposed to know about it. Everybody in Galway soon knew [about it] and half of Galway was working for the movie crew. Then the lead actor pulled out [and] their funding fell and they were gone. It was like a horde of locusts moving in and then [moving out].
They never completed the movie. They changed the farm. They took boards off things and put antiquing paint on things and they brought in a rusted old car to put in front of the barn. They changed everything inside the house [too].
