Alice in Darkness

Narrator isn't a big enough word for Joel.

See a Problem?

He is a voice actor and a damned good one. This book is laugh out loud funny and impossible to turn off. The narration by Joel is great. This will definitely be a book I'll listen to again. I took a chance on the reviews , as this is a new author, and narrator for me. BOY am I glad I did, no joke the mystery was fantastic, the snark, hilarious, and the story fluid. I fell in love Lane and Felix, their byplay kept me in stitches and sighs both.

I listened to it straight thru and promptly bought the follow up novel, It was terrific too! I honestly don't know if I would have kept going if I'd tried only visually reading the book. The humor in this is brought out so much more and better in Joel Leslie's delivery of the lines than I think in the actual written word. It's all in the delivery. The two main characters, Felix and Lane, have the sort of "I hate that I kind of like you" attitude in the beginning with one another and Leslie not only pulls off their banter beautifully, but made me believe these two snarky lovers were perfect for each other.

I can see those two crazy kids really making a go of it, if Felix doesn't get them both killed with his shenanigans. There's plenty of action, humor, heat, and a HFN ending. Definitely check it out in audio for the best experience. Don't get me wrong, it was funny as hell, but wow! He continues to wow his listeners with his talent. In this case, he brought Felix to life, capturing his snark perfectly. JL also captured Felix's vulnerability and, at times few , his sensitivity; especially when dealing with Lane. It goes without saying that the overall performance was great, but wow, did he nail the essence of Felix.

This will be an audiobook that I'll relisten to often. I loved this book when I read it but Joel brought it to a whole new level! I can't wait for the next in the series!! Wow what an exciting story and so amusing in my places. Excellent narration by Joel Leslie. I have literally just finished listening to this book and before I get stuck into the next one I had to write a review, cause OMG! And Lane, just my heart. His so strong, but you can literally see all his vulnerabilities.

I just love this book, there are so many laugh out loud moments and it has me on the edge of my seat till the end. Love, love, love this book. This is a really great book, it makes you laugh so much as well as being a really good story, cannot wait to read book 2. Exciting action, good relationship and I actually found myself laughing out loud many many times which was completely unexpected.

This is so much better than the usual boring trope out there, and it was refreshing to have a proper plot that hooked me so much that I listened to it all on my headphones in one day. Hilarious, thrilling and suspenseful all in one. He has so much sass, snark and wit, Joel has done an amazing job bringing him to life! Cant wait for more and look forward to see what trouble Felix finds himself in next time! Keep your audiobooks, even if you cancel. The intro really draws you in - and this is a good combo of actually really bad things happening to a MC and some great dialogue between the characters that make them seem perfect for each other. Jun 03, Kazza rated it it was ok Shelves: This book had so much promise and started somewhat interestingly. I didn't mind the fact that both guys had attitudes. People with a disability, particularly when it's new, can be sarcastic and shitty and a non tea and sympathy response can work. The first sex scene was a silly plot device to make the two men hit it off, and for the banter to continue in a more 'we gay dudes get along now' way.

It was tacky from the way it happened to the reasons it happened. I was willing to overlook it because This book had so much promise and started somewhat interestingly. What started out as something that could be interesting devolved into immature and repetitive dialogue, and the same-old-same-old annoying banter and awkward and embarrassing behaviour.

That Lane could shoot people with the accuracy he did while blind was, well, something I do not like the same words being used a lot, and there are also other words used in rapid succession of one another that irked me. I prefer my characters fully fleshed out, having sharp dialogue as well. I also like chemistry and these MCs completely lacked that.

I can see why readers would like this book, I truly can, there was so much promise. Overall it annoyed me far more than it enamoured me. I would recommend the Bad Behavior series by L.

Witt and Cari Z. Mar 08, Ashley rated it it was amazing Shelves: Seriously amazing and funny as hell story! Omg Felix and Lane were amazing characters, I love their interactions and how much of smart asses they are to each other. I've read a couple books with blind or deaf MC's and one was kind of like Hidden in Darkness with the way they interacted but most books have too much pity and tip toeing around the person with the issue that it takes away from the story and makes it feel awkward.

Felix is probably one of my favorite characters ever, he's funny but s Seriously amazing and funny as hell story! Felix is probably one of my favorite characters ever, he's funny but so damn caring in a way that's not fluffy and all "oh look at me I'm perfect". I don't usually read stories about cops, agents or anything like that cause I can't stand the angst and the worry, chasing, and the plotting and planning but with this story no matter what they were going through it was done in a way that they were still joking and not too overly dramatic about everything.

If you're putting off reading this the only thing I'll say is make sure you have nothing to do after you start it because it's hard to put down. But, the snarky ridiculous back and forth between Lane and Felix engaged me and I found I liked these guys. Don't be surprised though if you just can't get into this one. It's really not going to b Don't give up on this one early.

It's really not going to be an overwhelming fan favorite. You'll love it or hate it. As always, be prepared to suspend your disbelief because this is an over the top LE involved investigation that would never happen and then you have to let go of it again at how well Lane gets around and adjusts even though he is traumatically newly blind and you'll probably enjoy this one. With KU it's not much of risk.

I didn't realize there was a second book. I think I'll be catching up with these guys again. Jul 13, Vivian rated it really liked it. Fun and suspenseful I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. Jun 13, Micah rated it did not like it Shelves: On The second day of work, the caretaker has sex with his employer. I thought it was going to turn out to be a dream sequence. The man of a thousand voices. I can picture every wonderful minute.

The characters were engaging and fun with each other. Their snar Joel, Joel, Joel. Their snarky and disparaging words may have come across as rude and nasty on paper, but delivered by this talented voice actor, the barbs and insults were just plain funny! I fell in love with Felix. Totally enjoyable and not one to live with caution.

He barges into situations without much forethought and then somehow manages to get himself out of trouble. He also takes the straight-laced Lane and makes him unquestionably loveable. Lane was an undercover copy who was tortured and blinded by one of the men he was stalking. Instead of feeling sorry for the blind guy, Felix pokes and prods and nags and niggles and Lane gives back just as much as he gets. Through Felix, we see Lane come to a greater acceptance of his blindness and definitely to a greater acceptance for and need for Felix. Their relationship is solid by the last scene.

I highly recommend this story in audio format. May 13, April rated it it was amazing. I loved this book! Really crazy mix of a lot of cool tropes: Fast-paced, but not forced. Lots of great character development all the way down to minor characters. Lots of love and sexy times. This was just a fun book to read!!! Felix is a slightly down on his luck guy w I loved this book! Felix is a slightly down on his luck guy who seems like he might be easily pushed around He's small but he's mighty and doesn't let the brooding patient Lane push him around.

He's feisty, but not really snarky in the typical way. He's complicated, and I loved him! Lane is muscled and used to danger, but being blinded has thrown him off course. He, naturally, hates any kind of care-taker, even though he needs one. Felix is about the least qualified, but somehow he turns out to be perfect There is attraction eventually Lane is too messed up to think too much about Felix, but Felixi is determined.

Hidden in Darkness

There are wild sexy times. And there is character growth. And there is the big mess that Lane barely escaped from that hunts them all down. Big nasty bad guy, who should be two-dimensional but somehow isn't. I don't believe for a moment the bad guy is that good at evading the law, since he seems to take a very personal interest in hunting our guys down! I read too many books and even my favs can get to be a little ho-hum after a while--but this book woke me up and made me pay attention.

I just loved it. And I'm so happy there's a sequel out already! Jun 18, J rated it really liked it Shelves: A great story marred just slightly by maybe a little too many chases, shootings, kidnappings, etc. Lane is a blind policeman who we meet in a gruesome prologue to the book. Felix is hired to try and take care of Lane now that he is at home and trying to deal with numerous injuries and his blindness. Lane is angry, obnoxious and not in the least interested in having someone take care of him.

Felix is young Felix is 25 and Lane is 37 , grew up in a totally dysfunctional family and give 4. Felix is young Felix is 25 and Lane is 37 , grew up in a totally dysfunctional family and gives Lane's crap right back to him. The other main character is Copper, a police dog that was too nice for that line of work who Felix stole from his mean policeman owner when said policeman found himself in jail.

Felix and Lane bicker, snark, fight off bad guys, have guns pointed at them and fall in love. No one should read this book if they are easily offended by jokes about blindness or being short. Felix, by his own admission, is "height challenged. Dec 10, Joyfully Jay rated it really liked it Shelves: A Joyfully Jay review.

The story starts out with a super intense prologue where we see Lane being held captive after having been beaten and battered, and we follow along as he somehow manages to escape. So we know as readers there is something mo A Joyfully Jay review. So we know as readers there is something more going on, but not quite what, and Felix has no idea that the situation is anything more than it seems. This really builds the suspense nicely as the danger starts to trickle in and we really get going with the thriller portion of the story.

Winters nicely balances the romance and the action and manages to keep their relationship growing even as Felix and Lane are in the midst of running for their lives and trying to bring down the bad guy. Jun 12, Lelyana rated it really liked it Shelves: Felix is such a character. I enjoyed this, the most funny part was the "I don't know". Felix and Lane are just meant for each other. I'm going to read the second book, since Felix mentioned that he's going to take over Lane's family. Not a perfect book, a little boring at the action part, but I'm kinda liked this one for the humour.

Jun 11, Ayla rated it it was amazing Shelves: This book was incredible! It truly had everything you can think of. It was funny, sweet, inappropriate, suspenseful.

More from the same

I really really enjoyed this book! Lane, an undercover cop, gets captured and is blinded not spoiler Would definitely recommend it! Jun 22, Denise White rated it really liked it. I couldn't understand how in one sentence the MC's were having sex when Lane was acting like he couldn't stand Flex There was no build up or nothing I'm glad I did I enjoyed the book even tho the timing and everything was just off Like how are you in Nevada but people that are in Chicago just show up No plans ride no explanation It was t Wow 3. It was tones of this type of scenario There was no explanation of time at all In one sentence Flex is beat to hell but then the next he taking out stitches and is fine I was like WTH Nothing saying how much time had elapsed But I did like both these characters and will continue to the next book One more thing Lane had way more experience to me than a detective would normally have I thought more assassin or special forces or something For him to be newly blind and the things he did didn't match the job description Feb 20, Nick rated it it was amazing.

Lane and Felix are so great together. Their banter and bickering just made the whole book fun even when they were being chased around by bad guys. Lane was injured in the line of duty and suffered a permanent and life changing injury. He gave Lane as much of a hard time as Lane gave him and before they knew it, that morphed into a camaraderie and unique relationship that I just want to read so much more of.
