She wants to start a business with her friends in Massachusetts, but her mother wants Grade to travel to France with her to help an aunt who is having a baby.

Grace finds many adventures and challenges await her, both on her journey and at home. Realistic fiction can also illuminate experiences that children have not had. Grace traveled to France in this book, and most grade school children will not have had that travel experience. Many times throughout the book Grace is going to different places and highlights of what she saw there were featured in this story. Also presented were the many outdoor cafes that are very prominent in France, and not necessarily so in the US.

Some books also serve as a kind of preparation for living. The fact that Grace wants to start a dog-walking business with her friends and does so despite traveling to France, gives the reader an insight into what it takes to start a small businesses at a young age. This book reaches its audience of fluent readers rather well.

The vocabulary is extensive and challenging at times, but fluent readers are usually adept at decoding. Reader involvement is also an important part of how well a book reaches its intended audience. Grace follows young Grace Thomas to Paris one summer. Her aunt is on bed-rest and apparently the summer is the busy season at their bakery, so Grace's mother and Grace both fly to France to help out around the house and the bakery. Left behind are Grace's best friends Maddy and Ella, who promise to wait for Grace's return in August to start their summer business.

Much to Grace's disappointment, they don't wind up waiting and instead start a dog walking service. In France, Grace finds that the language barrier is harder to cross than she realized, as her cousin doesn't speak much English and her adult family members are busy taking care of the new baby and the bakery. The only good thing, aside from the city itself, is a stray dog Grace's cousin has found. Grace earns the dog's trust and names her Bonbon. She's on the cover of the book.

Bonbon will steal the show if you are an animal lover at ALL. I'm not the target age for this and haven't been for awhile, but I do wonder how many kids will catch on that it's pretty ridiculous for adults to just assume that two children who don't speak the same language at all will magically be able to keep each other company for five weeks without a translator. It takes a bit of work to even get them to the point where they can ask, "how do you say? I am curious as to where Book 2 will go, and like I said before, Bonbon is a scene stealer.

I liked her wording, the way she spun the story, and of course Reese. Tom's inner monologue became repetitive and i stopped feeling sorry for him. Apr 21, Sam T rated it it was amazing. Book review: American Girl of the Year 'Grace' shares her adventures in Paris

Since Grace longs for a dog, she suggests a dog walking business to her friends, who mutually agree to the idea. Grace and her mother will be spending five So I read this book shortly after it was released, and as a devout AG fan, was captivated. Grace and her mother will be spending five weeks in Paris to help her aunt, who is facing difficulties in her pregnancy. Though quite the shocker at first, the proposed trip to visit her relatives in Paris brings much excitement and anticipation for Grace. Grace and her mother spend the first few days of their trip as tourists, visiting such famous sights as the Eiffel Tower, the Pont des Arts bridge, and the Notre Dame cathedral.

On top of all of this, Grace discovers that her friends betrayed their promise to wait to start a business until after she returned from her trip. Despite these problems, though, Grace does have a new friend to comfort her—a little stray dog that she feeds and lovingly names Bonbon. Still, by trial and error in caring for Bonbon, she learns that sometimes, the best things in life can only be found or achieved when we take a chance; and if we make mistakes, we can either give up our efforts entirely, or we can learn from our mistakes to become all that we were meant to be.

She would be more open to new experiences. Most of all, she would be a better friend to Sylvie. As the weeks of the trip progress further, Grace comes to see Paris as her second home. She begins to learn French baking with Sylvie, and the two cousins quickly grow close. When Grace is nearing the end of her trip, Bonbon disappears.
