You Might Be Getting OLD! (Been There, Done That Book 1)

BOOK EXCERPT: 'Been There, Done That' by Deborah Roberts and Al Roker

By the time we got to my stop, she had forgotten all about her terrible day.

She started to dig in her purse to pay for the cab, but before she could find her wallet, I handed her more than enough to cover the ride. I had a little extra pep in my step as I walked home that afternoon. I felt good being able to do something kind for a stranger, and I felt more gratitude about life. Gratitude makes people happier and it allows us to accomplish more through the art of doing small things every day. Sometimes you just need to slow down, take a beat and remember to think about everyone you encounter—because my mom was absolutely right.

The time of day belongs to everyone. If I practice this daily, I can be the best example for my kids. My roots are truly a part of me, and I thank my mom for planting them so deeply. And as her daughter, my responsibility—my obligation— is to pass those timeless seeds of wisdom on to my own children with the hope that they too feel the strength and security that I did to bloom where they are planted. When I see a mom struggling with her stroller as she navigates the entrance to the grocery store, I am quick to grab the door.

I want Leila and Nicky to learn that we can all spread a little happiness in just a few words or with a momentary kind gesture. Like my mom always said, the time of days belongs to everyone. At first glance they may seem like an unlikely pair. Read an excerpt from the book below: I could have taken an attitude back with her.

It's lovely to see our voices as the experts while others who care so greatly for us serve the authors in a consultative role - as it should be.

Tony Attwood, leading self-advocate Anita Lesko, and "community organizer" Craig Evans comes a full chorus of voices from the autism spectrum: Also, English not my 1st language so if it rambles a bit Blessed is the right word but it's sometimes a bit hard to see if, like for me, this blessing came under a very heavy disguise. I had my successes, I could write a testimonial about these my-selves and have it published. I rather not publish all the things I got wrong in my life, I'm sure we all have our own stories, cried some buckets of tears, and are all looking forward to get it righter this time.

Why do I think this is a good book?

Quick Overview

It is an organised book. You can read it front to back to get an overall idea, but you can just as well pick a topic from the table of contents and jump right to it and read only about that specific thingy you want to understand and tackle right now in quite a direct way, without having to wade trough a mountain of also interesting but not relevant now stuff. I recommend you first read the book, then dig out specific topics to work on. It's written by Aspies, lots of them.

Been There. Done That. Try This!

We Aspies are all different. So there is never a single story that matches our problem just our way. While most of this book also is NotMyProblemNotMyWay, there is in every chapter read ProblemSubset at least one testimonial that fits me and is therefore helpful. Often there is more then one. It's a mixture of cheer and solutions.

Been There. Done That. Try This!

Without the courage and the energy to soldier on, solutions become somewhat useless therefore 3 cheers for cheering us on. Every chapter ends with a summary by Tony Attwood. It's also quite a hefty read, too hefty if you need to know a specific bit in a hurry. It also more geared toward childhood. Readable, to the point, exact, sufficient. I love this book. It is helpful without being condescending, it addresses real issues that people with ASD face everyday like anxiety, making friends, building or maintaining intimate relationships, dealing with sensory overload, and others.

It may help someone who doesn't know a lot about ASD to get a better understanding of what an autistic or Aspie person experiences, but it's really more for ASD people who haven't quite figured out how to navigate some of our unique difficulties. There were things in here that I didn't realize I was struggling with until I read others' experiences and realized they were exactly like mine.

The personal writings of people who have been there lends a feeling of authenticity and honesty to this book, and the suggestions by Dr. Attwood at the end of each chapter make this book feel professional. Diagnosed very late in life 60's most of my life has been difficult and unsatisfying.

Dr. Dre - Been There Done That

After several years of wrestling with my new found reasons for the difficulties I came to the place of getting on with the positive instead of living in the negative. This book is written by several older people for older people and is all about getting on and living with Aspergers in a healthy and positive way. A Must Read for individuals on the spectrum. I am a 48 year old, recently diagnosed adult female with ASD. I am so grateful to have found this book.

I recommend this book to any one, at any age on the spectrum. I even read portions of it to my neuro-typical spouse, in attempt to bridge a greater understanding between us and in hopes of recruiting his advocacy.
