The book is based on Sonechka's journals and shows what a beautiful young, intelligent woman and brave woman experienced during the Russian Revolution and her journey to Shanghai and then America. This story is very similar to what my grandparents experienced and I really appreciate all the background and historical information that was included in this story.

I am going to share it with my family. I have read many books about White Russians in Shanghai. This one truly illustrates the courage these people displayed in the face of terrible trials.

Good for everyone to read This was a very interesting account of a little known to Americans period in Russian history and the Japanese invasion of China, the White Russians decimation at the hands of the Bolsheviks first with Lenin and later with Stalin. The story is a true account taken from the author's mother's diary, and reset historically accurate by their current research.

In Shanghai Sonechka became one of the thirty thousand White Russian exiles, shunned and abhorred by the rest of the world. Wounded in the Civil war, Vladimir was evacuated to Constantinople Istanbul. After numerous adventures he arrived in Shanghai where he worked for the French authorities as an interpreter.

During the Japanese occupation Sonechka's remarkable resourcefulness enabled the family to survive. In the widowed Sonechka fled Shanghai with her two daughters to America. Her dream of reaching America was finally fulfilled.

This book is co-authored by Olga and John Hawkes from the incredible legacy of memoirs and stories left to Olga by her mother Sonechka. Olga and John have brought the neglected Russian diaspora in Shanghai alive.
