Easy to meet shuttle bus just outside circumvesuviana station. Need to buy tickets in kiosk to left of station for 22 euro which includes the entry to the cone and transfer to the top in a bouncy 4x4 bus, like a mini coaster ride on it's own. Talk on bus about the history and then after the 20 min walk to the summit another talk about what you can see.
Best value trip to summit if you are brave enough to go it alone. It may sound costly but it was well worth it and well organised. There is still a 20min walk up gravely path to the top so wear sensible shoes!
This was a great way to go up Vesuvius and the cost is the same as the normal bus and entrance fee You pick up the shuttle bus right outside Pompei station and get taken to the transfer to the 4x4 vehicle. It's about 20 minutes and since we got there for the first one of the day at 9.
The bus is a bit like an airport shuttle. You then transfer to the 4x4 and all get seats and is comfortable.
Then up through the national park. Beautiful and wonderful smell of flowers. Much quieter and stunning views. We had about 1.
There is an idiotic exchange of tickets but it's very obvious and not a problem. It was also very what time we had to be back at the 4x4. All very well run and organised. At the top it's not at all clear where Pompei is below and there are no signs! This is nothing to do with the bus company at all- they do their job well. By the way - you need to be able to walk up the gravelly slope for about m and the ground is uneven- it's a volcano!
All in all an excellent excursion. Buy your train ticket to Pompei separately - it only cost us 3. The views are stunning and you are on the most dangerous volcano in the world!
