I've been learning re-learning from secondary school daze French online with Duolingo, and although they do provide good but brief instruction, I wanted a book to which I could turn whenever I like. I am looking forward to working on both programmes and expect to have a good working knowledge of the language soon.
Now, I just need to practice speaking! One note regarding the packaging and condition of the book: Consequently, it arrived with dings and a tear to the paperback covers, front and back. There was also an impression of a ball point pen on the front cover as if someone had used it as support for scribbling to start the ink flow. I bought this as a 'new' book, so I'm a wee bit disappointed that it arrived in a 'used' condition; in a book shop, I would have selected a copy with an undamaged cover.

For me it falls short in two areas: With regard to the ease, I found myself tripping over topics that are either not well done or, to be fair, difficult to get across with the written word and so are either not good candidates for a "Dummies" book or should be supplemented with audio or a link to audio.
Stress on syllables would be a good example here: I already knew how to pronounce the words in question, but if I were just using this book, I would be confused. With regard to the pronunciation,I often found it misleading. There's a lot to this book and there are some valuable references, I'm sure I'm still going through it.
A "Dummies" book on any language is a daunting task, and the author has done a nice job in many ways here. But I would not use this as my initial guide for French grammar.
I am taking a french intro class at the college level and literally have a teacher that likes to explain a new concept in ten minutes and not touch on it again. Literally a life saver and helps so much more than the textbook that was required for the class. Perfect for newbies like myself! Really helps break down word and phrase meaning and how to actually speak coherent sentences!! Very helpful with all aspects of French grammar. Well beyond the conjugation of verbs.
This was a super helpful resource for me during my French two class. It explains things in a simple and easy to understand way. I almost preferred this to my textbook! This book is so well written. I have quite some french materials but this is the best so far. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to have a good foundation in French. One person found this helpful.
