Gull Rock (Book 1 of the Wish You Were Here Series)

I have a wide range of book interests which includes a good thriller. I was wowed by The Da Vinci Code, and then every author wanted to copy this style of story telling which put me off Dan Brown for a long time. I love nothing better than a book a day on my sun bed on holiday. The best and most intriguing this year has to be Forbidden Fruit by Rhonda Caudill- with a twisted story of Jack the Ripper, the author had researched Victorian London well, and this has to be the book I really could not put down, and thinking I was the great detective, the author proved me wrong. Currently I work on a freelance basis but previously, I was the prizes and awards manager at a charity that promotes books and reading, Booktrust.

All this is so that i can read and find the best thriller writing for my own pleasure — and nothing else. I found working for publishers too limiting since each publishing house has its own take — and I like them all! In the past I have had articles published in the Bristol Herald Courier Newspaper, Treasured Poems of America, as well as having one of my stories showcased on a local radio station.

A Letter from Gull Rock, Little Compton: A Story of the Hurricane of 1938

I recently received my diploma with highest honors from the Stratford Career Institute in Creative Writing. She was familiar enough with Richard that he was most likely a relative of Elizabeth — a cousin, son or brother, or even possibly her husband. Both were fortunate not to have been swept away in the storm. My father, born in a farm house on Metacom Avenue in Bristol in , had related similar stories of his experiences in the Hurricane to me since I was a kid.

He turned thirteen in and was living in Fishtown, which was once a village outside of Mystic, Connecticut there seems to be little left of Fishtown at present beyond its old cemetery.

Before he got home, the water flooding the road to Fishtown was up to the front sprocket of his bicycle and he was pedaling in a foot and half of water. Then the storm really hit. The old farm house, built in , weathered the storm with only some minor damage, but my father, my grandparents and my Uncle Walt my grandmother as it happened was also very pregnant with my Uncle Bruce in September looked on as the wind blew the roofs off two barns, and then tore both barns off their foundations and rolled them across the yard.

Conditions in Onset were bad enough that selectmen had apparently closed off access to the area to those without a pass. Who bundled together these newspapers, the letter and the pass and eventually donated these items to the Western Rhode Island Civic Historical Society for posterity? Altogether, there may be enough information in these documents to eventually identify who Elizabeth and Richard were.

The one clue that would have identified the those involved — the envelope the letter was mailed in — was not with the letter or in the bundle of newspapers. In any event, here is another story about survival and human perseverance during a tremendous disaster. If anyone reading this is a living eyewitness to the Hurricane of , or knows of someone who is, or who has an interesting story that has been passed down to them about the storm — and wishes to record an oral history for posterity — please contact the author at wrichs.

In his very funny poem, Consolation , Collins writes about all the pointless, touristy things he might have been doing in Europe instead of spending the summer at home.

I often think of writing a first draft as painting with a pen. The emotion, the memory, the wanting to freeze this moment, the fear of loss — whatever this scene conjures up is up to you. Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to go on holiday. You might want, like Billy Collins, to write about how that feels.
