The author has a conversational style that makes for an easy, enjoyable read, packed with useful lists, tips, and resources. I'm sure I'll often be referring to this book as I transition into retirement. Aug 12, Mark Lindsey rated it liked it. Good coverage of all the important topics for retirement, including what you want to do when you get there.

The financial stuff was pretty complete, had a nice section on Long Term Care which helped me by giving a hint on LTC for military folks. Not in depth, not prescriptive, but good for getting you thinking comprehensively.

Feb 12, Kristen rated it it was ok Shelves: Great advice for retirees The author covered twelve very essential subjects, giving common sense advice and very detailed descriptions of items everyone needs to consider. Mar 05, Joe rated it it was ok. This book would be a good starting point for someone who hasn't really thought much about retiring.

Not recommended for someone who is already familiar with the concepts of retirement planning, and looking for additional insight. As someone who is planning to retire early and has done significant reading on preparing for retirement, I was disappointed at the level of information and guidance in the book. The layout of the book and topics addressed in the 12 chapters seemed very promising, but the This book would be a good starting point for someone who hasn't really thought much about retiring.

The layout of the book and topics addressed in the 12 chapters seemed very promising, but the author seemed to be more intent on relating his personal story and experiences in retirement rather than providing a broader perspective on each individual retirement topic. Much of the book is spent describing the author's own personal experience and then trying to add a broader discussion of the topic on top of that.

I found the result to be lacking in insight and advice for a broader audience, as well as lacking in detail on many of the topics. Jun 24, Susan rated it really liked it Shelves: The twelve chapters cover topics from how to decide when to retire, to the ins and outs of Social Security and Medicare, to long term care insurance, to retirement plans and investments, to what to do and where to live, in succinct, clear prose. Each chapter also includes recommended websites and books for more information.

Some information on Social Security and Medicare may have changed since this edition was prepared; of course, that is an issue for any book on these topics. Some things such as long term health care and the different part supplement programs to Medicare and even when to retire and start taking the SSI funds is very confusing but something we all have to go through.

I don't know why some people rated this with low stars. I am a CPA so like to think of myself as fairly savvy in these topics but Stan Hinden brought up additional issues and more detail to think about. Maybe the people who rated it low want a roadmap laid out for them and all the thinking to be done for them, which is impossible since each person's needs and income are different.

I particularly liked in this fourth addition that we have the benefit of his hindsight as he is now in is mids an I don't know why some people rated this with low stars.

I particularly liked in this fourth addition that we have the benefit of his hindsight as he is now in is mids and has been retired for a number of years. Particularly the impact of his wife's long-term illness and the illnesses they both endured not long after retirement.

How can I age successfully? I guess this book was fine but I found myself a bit bored, and I like these kind of books. Didn't seem to add anything new, some of the information, particularly regarding health care is quickly, if not already dated. Dec 09, Nancy rated it really liked it. I'm close to retirement and found it reinforced some of the information I've researched on my own. I recommend reading it 10 to 15 years before retirement to give some insight as to what to expect in the "getting ready" to retire. Most of us spend more time researching a trip then we do retirement. Mar 23, Megan rated it really liked it. This is a great book for anyone looking to retire in the next 15 years. Not only does he explain social security, medicare, K and pensions, but what decisions you have to make about each one now as well as in the future.

It is straight forward and an easy read without talking down to you. He made things clearer by telling us how he and his wife worked through it all. One of those books that I couldn't read straight through and had to peruse in sections. Some good info presented by the man who has travelled down the road I'm going to be going. However, it's still all quite confusing and still overwhelming.

He gives a pretty good explanation of Medicare with all its incomprehensible rules, etc.. I found this book helpful and liked that it's written in a clear, concise manner. It's a good overview of what to consider when planning for retirement. The author wrote a retirement column for the Washington Post for years. He offers his own opinions and where to look websites, books, organizations for more in depth information. This is very good overview of the many things to consider when planning for retirement, especially if you're a married man with a professional career.
