Baguettes and bicycles: a cycling adventure across France (Eurovelo Series Book 1)

Adopting the intriguing mantra that 'cycling is just an interlude between meals,' Steven Herrick indulges in three courses for lunch and four courses for dinner, straining the bounds of lycra-clad good taste while testing the frame strength of his bicycle. Not content with crossing France from west to east and cycling over 1, kilometres, the author also decides to tackle the iconic mountains of the Tour de France.

Steven Herrick has written twenty-one books for children and young adults. He travels the world visiting schools to perform his poetry and to discuss his books. This is his first travel book. It was a beautiful escape from being stuffed on a tube in central London. Im going to take up cycling now as a result.

One person found this helpful. A cyclist who is a writer and can write a page turner. This made me look up on the world map and follow the route. Think i'll have to tour some of these areas. By the way, this is not a follow the Tour de France tip book as so many books can be and living off past glory.

He regularly tours throughout Australia, Asia and Europe performing his work in schools and at festivals. In , he published his first travel book, 'baguettes and bicycles: They have two adult sons, Jack and Joe. A lovely distraction from the glum faces in my train carriage. It made me want to get off at the next station, buy a bicycle and begin my own adventure. A well-written book that entertains and educates in equal measure.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Mar 31, Jacqueline rated it it was amazing Shelves: Steven is a seasoned European cyclist and as in previous adventures was accompanied by his wife Cathie and their two bikes, named Craig and Jenny. This book is not just about cycling, there is humour, love for his wife, food and most of the countries they find themselves cycling through , a love-hate relationship with his bike, and interesting descriptions of their journey.

In a world where diet and a travel memoir about a km cycle ride from St Malo in France to Prague in the Czech Republic. In a world where diet and going without are hot topics, it was lovely to roll with them from one patisserie stop to another beer and snack stop throughout the journey.

It showed the great balance to be found in cycling and eating for enjoyment, their cycling was always taken at a sensible pace and despite the many tasty treats there was no real gluttony either. This all came together to make a very readable and perfectly paced travel memoir that takes you along the rivers and back roads from France to Belgium to Holland to Germany and into the Czech Republic. If you love touring Europe, by bike or by book then this is book that will take you there and make you smile while you are reading it. Feb 17, Peggy rated it liked it.

I wouldn't exactly call it a memoir. I'd call it a travel journal, and as such, it was just fine. I wrote down the names of a few towns I'd like to visit in Czech Republic and northern France some day, and one or two towns in The Netherlands and Germany. I would like to have 'seen' his wife a little more clearly. She was mostly a shadow figure. I know only that she ate a lot of salads with goat cheese, and she preferred white wine to the volumes of local beer the author seemed to down each Well I know only that she ate a lot of salads with goat cheese, and she preferred white wine to the volumes of local beer the author seemed to down each day.

But it wasn't gripping reading Let's just say, I didn't find it a compelling read, and I read a couple of other books during the time I was carrying this one around on my Kindle. However, for someone contemplating a bicycle trip, it would be easy to follow the author's path and perhaps avoid some of the pitfalls he encountered.
