DAVID R. BARTON SHAMAN BAY: HOW THE CAPTAIN AND CREW OF A MEGA YACHT DEAL WITH DISASTER

In fact, it covered the same ground: Weinstein is not making this stuff up. So the overall takeaway is that, yes, you should read a book about the issue of Christian chauvinism in the military—but it should be With God On Our Side. And now for the book log: The lesson for this month? Second half of No Snowflake in an Avalanche. The Way We Never Were: Coontz makes the case that such an America never existed; instead, she relentlessly busts the myths of an America where Father knew best and Mother wore pearls.

This is a brilliant book that remains as timely now as it did when it was first published in A guy is shown a special passageway that leads to the fall of His mission, inherited from the man who first stumbled onto the passage, is to stop the assassination of JFK.

Paul Brians’ Vita

Aftert all, women were stifled and people of color were suffering under Jim Crow while that Southeast Asian war was ramping up. Oh, this is such a good book! Ancestor by Scott Sigler. The San Francisco-based Sigler is a master of creepy and scary just check out my review of Infected.

A-Z Bibliography

When the accident-prone daughter of a French businessman disappears in Brazil and the detective sent down to find her returns empty-handed, the businessman's company psychologist comes up Sequel to Great Sky River. The Long Way Back. No direct references to nuclear war. Perera is excellent at moving from general existential teenaged angst—young Khalid at home in England, a bit rebellious and bored—to serious existential drama. Then he went to Halliburton and helped them get those contracts.

In this one, Sigler takes us inside a genetic engineering project with a goal of producing animals—using genetically manipulated material to create embryos which will be implanted in cattle—that will have internal organs compatible with humans. Written as a serial, Ancestor features short chapters and the sort of quick-paced plot that kept me reading past bedtime.

Ashes of the Earth: However, this mystery is set in a near-future that is struggling to recreate a civilization in the aftermath of an Armageddon of the nuclear war type, and it opens with a prisoner racing to stop a child from committing suicide by hanging. Wise is really good at breaking down these walls we use to keep out knowledge of our participation in the institutionalized privilege of being white, and he shows it in this book.

The Catastrophist by Ronan Bennett.

COPING WITH THE CRISIS

This had been on my shelf for a long time, but I think it suffered from being read during the week. An Irish writer narrates as he follows his girlfriend, a journalist, to Africa. I may need to read it again, though; having read it while coming down with the flu may have influenced my opinion. Timeshares anthology edited by Jean Rabe and Martin H. It gets three stars out of five, mostly for keeping me occupied during the few hours I was awake over the worst three days of the flu.

Plague Year by Jeff Carlson. Jeff Carlson is awesome! Plague War by Jeff Carlson. Second of the trilogy. More time travel, in this case, through a tunnel that can be accessed from a wall-off portion of the basement that Tom Winter discovers under his new house. He exits the tunnel in New York in and finds himself among beatniks, poets and artists. Plague Zone by Jeff Carlson. Last of the trilogy. Look for a short review in print. A Small Hotel is the latest from Butler, a short novel.

A Novel and Severence: Stories got rave reviews—but this one was a little slow and dreamy for me. Now this novel was very smart and a lot of fun. Yep, just by creating time and space, God opens up the possibility of a rival—and offers an answer to the problem of evil, if not one that most theologians would accept. A Novel for a neat book club discussion. First half of The Anointed: Second half of The Anointed: Stephens and Gilberson accomplish two things with this book.

This is a really intriguing book, one that offers a relatively logical explanation for otherwise unexplainable rejection of science. I particularly enjoyed his survey of rapture movies, and found many, many things to use as fodder for my blog, The United States of Armageddon. First half of Ragnarok: The End of the Gods by A. Second half of Ragnarok: Look for an online review soon. Overdone, over-intellectualized, and thank goodness over.

Frykholm is looking for the answer to the question: Why do American evangelicals like these novels so much? Half of Left Behind and Loving It: Second half of Left Behind and Loving It: Oh, this one was funny! An evangelical Chrsitian with a sense of humor. This is a very necessary critique of how FOXNews works, as well as a good thumbnail sketch of Ailes and his career.

Oh, but I wish it had been written by anyone else—preferably someone who does not spend all their time following and criticizing FOXNews! Seeking the Straight and Narrow: Look for a longer review later this week-early next; this will take more space than I have to use here—and it will certainly end up in my fat project, too. In the Courts of the Crimson Kings by S.

Stirling and The Good Atheist: An archaeologist goes to Mars to excavate the ruins of an ancient ruling people, and then the adventure begins. Interesting, and a rebuttal to people who think that atheists have no purpose in their lives. Academics take on the Whedonverse and pay most of their attention to Serenity and Dollhouse , which were good, but I loves me some Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

This was thoughtful and fun. Look for a longer review in print. This one will be in print, too. As the country goes into a financial meltdown, with businesses collapsing and people losing jobs and homes, violent crimes intermix with financial misdeeds. Sergeant Gunnhildur Gisladottir, newly transferred from the small-town police department in Hvalvik to the Serious Crimes Unit in Reykjavik , is suddenly very busy when a thug escapes from prison, and a man who had testified against him is seriously beaten. Then a fitness guru, who used to have her own TV show, is murdered.

The cases overlap, as the thug and the murder victim know people in common—and possibly the convict is responsible for her death. Gunna has two policemen at her disposal—and a friendly reporter who can sometimes give her an off-the-record tip. Fans of the movie Fargo will find much to like in the character of Gunna. Both are equally worthwhile reading. Much of the story is told from the perspective of Detective Paul Hjelm, a man who consistently lays himself—and everything he cares for—on the line for what he believes is right.

Each is shot in the head exactly twice, with a silenced pistol. The killer removes both slugs from the wall with tweezers, while listening to a special recording of a well-known jazz song by Thelonius Monk. Better still that the killer uses a gun—a quintessential, if not exclusive American approach. Dahl is the latest of several Scandinavian authors of crime novels to have their work translated for an extremely receptive American audience. With its gloomy atmosphere, intense characters, and complicated, abrupt plot twists, Misterioso fits perfectly within its genre. Fans of Scandinavian crime fiction will enjoy it deeply.

Closing out his Berlin trilogy, Son is set in , as the Nazis are tightening their stranglehold on Germany. Chief Inspector Nikolai Hoffner has just been ordered to retire from the Berlin police, after his superiors realized that his mother was Jewish. The younger son, Georg, has traveled to film a documentary in Spain, where fascists are beginning a civil war. After working there for several days, Georg goes missing.

With only a list of names and the help from a criminal boss with whom he has an understanding, Hoffner slips out of Germany and into Spain, to begin searching for Georg. The search requires crossing the Spanish countryside, where fighters from both sides of the developing civil war man jerry-rigged checkpoints. With authority in flux, approaching a checkpoint without showing the proper allegiance can be deadly. But amid rumors that Germany—officially neutral in the Spanish conflict—is secretly sending Nazi fighters and guns, Hoffner takes advantage by pretending to be a Nazi officer.

With this intense story, Rabb powerfully completes his trilogy. Desperately, Hoffner risks his life—and the lives of those who help him in his quest—while struggling with his fear that his effort will be in vain. Strong emotions and violent action mix with a courageous protagonist to make a memorable novel. In Zone One , Whitehead the author of such well-respected literary novels as The Intuitionist and John Henry Days , both of which I enjoyed posits a plague that turns humans into zombies of two types: The central character, Mark Spitz obviously, a nickname , is part of a para-military squad clearing the eponymous Zone One—a walled-off section of Manhattan—of stragglers.

But what Whitehead has done is use the style of an excellent novelist to delve deeply into what happens to the human mind—and soul, if you will—when it reaches the very end of normalcy, and he does it well. The second book in this literary apocalypse is Maureen F.

That is, after all, the very definition of conflict, and so the heart of great literature. Instead, he becomes a student of the zombie ecology, which is both perfectly sensible and incredibly horrifying. Both of these books are smart, thought-provoking—and in weird ways, funny—literature that also happens to be entertaining. Also Zone One by Colson Whitehead; see above.

Daytripper by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, a multiple-lives story about all the ways that one man might live and die. Zone One by Colson Whitehead. Stories by Alan Bennett. A young working couple take out an interest-only mortgage on a house in a decent neighborhood—but outside what they can afford—then fill it on credit. But when the economy goes south and they lose their jobs, they also lose the house and everything in it. Just like last month, except, as Hyman makes clear in Borrow , this particular case happened in This is a must-read primer on the American way of buying for anyone who resists economic texts.

Talbot and Bryan Talbot. Look for these in Coolhunting. I wish I could say that this was a heart-warming story of self-sacrifice, but what it is instead is honest. What this memoir addresses, though, is a rhetorical failure on the part of the pro-choice movement: Hoffman makes clear that the failure to acknowledge the humanity of the fetus puts the pro-choice argument at risk. You Are Not So Smart: This was easy to read, in short chunks which broke up easily, and translated complicated neurological and biological information into understandable 21st century American.

Call me a denialist. Vivienne Finche reviewed here. The rest of the collection is made up of interesting arcana that just happens to be good writing. Eggers and the crew at Valencia really know how to read for fun. Azzoni is funny and a very good writer.

‘Below Deck’: See What It’s Like To Join The Crew Of A Luxury Yacht - TODAY

I was a little depressed that a lesbian or bi woman having a relationship with a man is book-worthy. And sometimes a straight or bi woman has a relationship with another woman, too. Guantanamo Boy by Anna Perera. A young adult novel with a strong topical subject, Guantanamo Boy is the story of Khalid, a teenaged English Muslim, who is arrested by U.

He ends up in Guantanamo—and as you might know from my reporting on the issue, there are a number of teenagers who were incarcerated there by American forces. Perera is excellent at moving from general existential teenaged angst—young Khalid at home in England, a bit rebellious and bored—to serious existential drama. Like the science and tech anthology, which I read a couple of years back, the science and nature anthology goes heavily toward good writing over actual science although Scientific American and Wired are both well-represented. Adventures in the Margin of Error by Kathryn Schulz.

Schulz divides the book into two sections, the first of which looks at the physiological reasons for making errors and the second of which examines the emotional and mental consequences of error. It was interesting, and more interesting when I think about how it applies to you rather than how it applies to me. Eruption by Harry Turtledove. Then the world goes all apocalyptic—quickly in some places and slowly in others—because guess what?

Ash screws up the planet and the weather. You know, I really should have been a vulcanologist. Religion by Daniele Bolelli. Not nearly as iconoclastic as it could be, but kinda fun. Hull Zero Three by Greg Bear. Awesome science fiction novel, with a hero that awakens cold, wet and naked on the floor of a spaceship. His journey through the ship—and to recover his memory—is both fascinating and thrilling.

Poems by Rae Gouirand. The Plume Hunter by Renee Thompson. The Age of Austerity: I was a little turned off, though, by what felt like a lot of pessimism. Destroyermen, Book I by Taylor Anderson. I really like time-travel stories, so this was next on my list for brain candy. Anderson has built a series based on a WWI destroyer squadron—serving in WWII—that gets crashed into not so much a different time as a really, really different place. No books - sick. Stories by Maureen F. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation: In in the mining town of Leadville, Colo. While traveling by stagecoach to meet her sister at a trendy health spa in Manitou Springs, Inez witnesses the troubling sudden death of a fellow passenger.

She now has a new secret to hide—her suspicion that the Manitou Springs doctor who treated the man was responsible for his death. Patients drink his tonic after every meal—the doctor varies the ingredients for each patient—and their breathing, digestion, and other ailments improve. But Inez fears that it was the tonic that killed her fellow passenger. And her fears intensify as she finds members of her family taking the tonic.

But by questioning the doctor and his practice, Inez puts herself in danger from those whose livelihoods depend on the doctor and his tonics. Newly released in paperback, The Hypnotist is the first segment in a trilogy featuring Detective Inspector Joona Linna. Faced with a bloody triple murder in which three members of a family were slaughtered and a fourth seriously wounded, Joona pulls out all the stops when he learns that one member of the family was not at home.

Erik has sworn he would never again use hypnosis, following a disastrous hypnosis therapy group session a decade earlier. However, shocking events follow the hypnosis session, which draw Erik and his family into a nightmare. But The Hypnotist is less talk and more action—and it gets to the action quickly, in short bursts of text.

Many chapters are only three pages long. Although the novel is set in Sweden, it is a strong story that could easily be set in many other countries, including the U. The spirits reveal no great secrets to Ebeneezer Scrooge. They only reveal that other people exist , that they live their own lives beyond our reach. With the smallest effort we could imagine what they might — what they must — be doing. And that little bit of imagination is everything. It is the first thing the Golden Rule commands. Before you know how to do unto others… you must start by thinking of them, by putting yourself in their place.

I read it all the way through again last December for the first time since I was a kid, and was amazed at the language and power in a truly well-constructed story. That Dickens, he was one political dude. Jo is tracing the last days of a San Francisco attorney whose body was found in an abandoned gold mine in the Sierras.

His law firm hired Jo to determine whether his death was accidental or suicide. Auburn Reiniger was given a crime-adventure fantasy for her twenty-first birthday by her father, an extremely wealthy hedge fund manager. A gang of kidnappers with deadly force takes advantage, overpowering the hired crew carrying fake weapons. Whether in the Jo Beckett series or her earlier series featuring Evan Delaney, Meg Gardiner tells her stories without taking a breath, slamming from one intense scene to the next.

And even better for Gardiner fans, one of the story lines in The Nightmare Thief has Evan Delaney moving the action along. Previous review of The Dirty Secrets Club. Previous roundup review of The Memory Collector. Between jobs, South African private detective Jade de Jong accepts a new client. The case causes Jade to cross paths again with her ex-boyfriend, police Superintendent David Patel.

The attraction between Jade and David remains strong, complicating their efforts to work together. Jade herself struggles with the moral implications of her actions. Mackenzie tells a compelling story, filled with shady characters with murky motives. But Jade and David are good fighters to have in your corner. Previous review of Random Violence. If the mayor loses his job, Bruno faces loss of his as well. Denis is a quaint community with contemporary problems—a closing mill throws a number of people out of work; attacks on immigrant businesses possibly herald the influx of Asian gangs; and a longtime, beloved citizen has been murdered, possibly because of his work in intelligence.

However, the victim also was an expert in truffles, including the highly prized Black Diamond. And in addition to everything else, Bruno is faced with irregularities in the market where truffles are sold. Fortunately, Bruno has help from national police—including his intriguing former lover, Isabelle. But as always, his most effective work follows as a result of his extensive local knowledge. Also, his knowledge of fine food is key. Previous review of Bruno, Chief of Police.

Set in Southern California, the novels contrast serene landscapes with horrific violence—although Irene is surrounded by friends, and has a genuine partner in her police-detective husband, giving an overall optimistic tone to the series. The last time Irene faced the brilliant serial killer Nick Parrish, he almost killed her. In saving herself she almost killed him too, and left him paralyzed. He was later tried and convicted, and given a life sentence. These worsen when she learns that he has regained his ability to walk. In her mind, he is an outsized monster, superhuman and nearly omniscient.

And like the true adversary he is, Parrish manages to escape while traveling from the prison for medical treatment. His escape involves additional deaths. Worse, he now has something he was missing before he became famous—loyal followers who are helping him. More than anything, he wants his revenge on Irene.

He and his followers are coming for her. Together, they have resources, skills—and there is more than one serial killer among them. As Irene and her nemesis move toward a final show-down, Burke skillfully cranks the tension. Irene Kelly is a feisty, action-oriented heroine, ready to take on all threats and never willing to surrender. Like the previous novels in this series, Disturbance is deeply satisfying.

Shelley and her mother have been bullied frequently for many years. Following a confrontation in which two of her classmates set her on fire, Shelley now studies at home with tutors provided by her school. Her mother, a lawyer, is harassed and mistreated at work. But the hours the two of them spend at home alone together are idyllic.

He ransacks the house, ties up Shelley and her mother, and threatens them. The intruder counts on their passivity. Paralyzed with fear, they initially continue to be perfect victims. But unexpectedly, they finally become fed up, and erupt into violence. Once they let go of their normal restraint, Shelley and her mother viciously over-react, making the intruder pay an extreme price. The aftermath is as startling as their fighting back. Asking questions about how well a person knows what they would do when pushed too far, Mice creates both suspense and characters who matter. Air conditioners, cars, computers, phones —we use them almost every day.

Imagine living without them. He is more adept than most at avoiding the bugs and surviving in the hostile environment they create. He also knows a good amount of aikido, which catches the eye of an aikido master looking to set up a dojo in the territory. He joins her in her travels. Then, the bugs start evolving. Sound like a fascinating premise? Sound like a fascinating novel?

Well … sounds like one, but no. The cover and blurb promise an action-packed sci-fi coming-of-age adventure. Kim is too flawless a protagonist, too perfect for any reader to fully relate to him. A few paragraphs throughout the novel are spent speculating on the subject, but as a whole, the most seductive part of the premise is never explored. In fact, very few plot points introduced in the novel are fully explored and brought to closure. This could be set up for a sequel wherein—we hope—the origin and motive of the bugs are brought into light. The actual quality of the writing is fine.

Scenes involving aikido, injuries, or the consequences of disturbing the bugs can leave you cringing at the painfully realistic rendering of events. The real problem is that 7th Sigma —which, by the way, does not address its titular concept in the least—is wholly underwhelming. The story could have remained essentially the same whether there were metal-eating bugs around or not. Who wrote the plays attributed to Shakespeare at right? Edward de Vere , the 17th Earl of Oxford below, left. He was raised by Elizabeth I after his parents died, becoming her favorite, a poet and patron of both the theater and literature.

There are others, of course: I had a chance to chat with Dr. If you look i n the south, there were English who came over and intermarried and became more Irish than the Irish themselves. Our ancestors on the White side go back to about I went to school in a monastery that had been owned by the Whites until Do you think the Earl of Oxford wrote the plays? My father was a literary man, the editor of the Irish Times, and he never claimed the Earl of Oxford wrote Shakespeare. Now, he was never one to miss a tale, and I think he would have claimed it if he believed it. I hope to God he did.

It would mean there was at least one real decent literary person in the family. It would up the cachet incredibly. But does it really matter who wrote Shakespeare? So why not claim it? Why give it up? Not to mention his lands and money. So there were a lot of reasons for him not to take credit. Of course, there are a couple of plays that came out after the Earl died, which makes it a little more unlikely that he was the one who wrote them!

How would that work? We can have a treasure-trove of Shakespeare. But it is fun. The story stands up, well enough but not too well. Have you seen the movie yet? All our relatives seem to be much more exciting than we are. Yet we must struggle forward. The Green River Killer: Being related to the cops is one way to get the inside scoop on how the investigation really went, and that up close attention to emotional detail shows in this overview of the case that resulted in the conviction of Gary Ridgway for the Green River murders.

He confessed—in exchange for providing the locations of additional bodies and having the death penalty taken off the table—to murdering 49 women in the greater Seattle area over two decades. The actual number is probably higher; Ridgway claims 71, but other sources say the number could be more than Any woman who lived in the Pacific Northwest during the period remembers the terror, as well as the sense of security that came from the myth that he only killed prostitutes.

The graphic format eschews gore——which might not be expected——and goes instead for the emotional weight that fell on the detectives and deputies who were working to bring the murderer to justice. The Revisionists is that kind of novel, but with a twist. But is the future really so great, and is the present really that awful?

Then there are more complications: Mullen has married time travel to spy thriller in the most promising way, without losing the best attributes of either. Featuring the brilliant, intuitive, driven—and alcoholic—detective Harry Hole, The Snowman moves between creepy tension and heart-pounding action. A sadistic killer stalks and violently attacks adulterous women.

His ritual includes building a snowman a day or so before killing.

David R. Barton (Author of Last Chance)

The snow sculptures are also decorated with pieces taken from the victims. Nicknamed the Snowman, the killer is the target of an intense investigation. But even with the official focus and media attention, the Snowman succeeds in killing again as the police sift through likely candidates—among them some clever red herrings. Years earlier, a proud, egotistical, and smart detective had faced the Snowman and lost his life.

Unfortunately, Harry is not at his best. After years of scares and embarrassments, he has finally had enough and is doing his best to stop drinking. Overwhelmed at times with his need to drink, he struggles to clear his head. But he needs more than his substantial intellect to survive and defeat the killer. Creative and intense, and not for the faint-hearted, The Snowman is a chilling novel that lives up to the well-deserved reputation of Scandinavian crime novels. Here are a couple of short book picks from guest critics: Weir was living with her uncle, a man who became an unwitting murder accomplice, in a bar where she met Adrian, an apple farmer unable to stand up to his family or leave the business that eventually killed him.

Jason was at a blues weekend across the border in Canada when he picked up a young woman—the latest in a long line of young women—only to wake in a shabby hotel room with her lying dead in a pool of blood on the floor. Jason escaped without being seen, he thought. But soon the blackmail demands start.

The first thing McKenzie must find out is who the woman was—also he suspects she might not really be dead. No matter what he must do, or what it does to him, he has to keep going until he resolves both the blackmail and murder. As a storyteller, Housewright is a straight shooter.

Highway 61 contains all the essential ingredients for an action-packed thriller—car chases, fist-fights, and plenty of gunfire. It also has the basic requirement for a solid American noir, an unreliable client. In it, her expertise at weaving a suspenseful thriller is evident. Philadelphia native Shelby Sloan, now an independent year-old, has risen to every challenge life has thrown at her. Broke and single at 18, she gave birth to a daughter that she raised alone, working long hours while earning a college degree at the same time.

Topping the list is the fact that her daughter is happily married and has given her a wonderful grandson. Her daughter Chloe has gone overboard in the night, and is missing. Worse, she was missing for hours while the ship traveled away and a search has only just begun into an impossibly large area. As with any investigation into unnatural death, secrets surface—some involving Chloe herself.

While the specific website described in the story may not exist—along with its grisly conspiracy theories—a web search turns up more than one site that provides counts of overboard passengers as well as faces of missing passengers and cruise employees. Zoe and Jake, an early-thirties Brit couple married 10 years, have taken a skiing vacation in the French Alps.

They head out to ski particualry early one morning and are alone on the mountain when they are caught by an avalanche that nearly kills them—or so they believe. They struggle to dis-inter themselves from the snow in a captivating and claustrophobic section, but when they make their way down the mountain, they find their hotel—indeed, the entire village—is completely deserted. Their assumption of a safety evacuation is confirmed by frequent rumblings from the snow-covered mountain and occasional noises that may presage another avanlanche.

So as grateful survivors of one avalanche, they decide to get the heck out of Dodge to avoid another, but when they attempt to leave the village, they find that every route they take out brings them right back to where they started. So far, so good. If so, this is a nice genre break for him.

Dangerous and Paying For It: You might call this combo Mr. Dangerous by Paul Hornschemeier Villard is the story of Amy, a young college grad who works in retail, just like her single, divorced mother. In Paying For It , Brown mixes his own dissatisfaction with romantic love never worked for him! Brown does a great job of dismantling our puritannical attitude toward sex, but not so good at clarifying why and how women—even voluntarily—become sex workers, despite his lengthy appendices. It is, however, a very well-drawn and constructed graphic memoir, if not particularly relevant to the thoroughly criminalized and violence-ridden world of prostitution in America Brown is Canadian.

Jay Feldman provides more than a smidgen of context as he takes an up close and uncomfortable look at American fear, scapegoating and surrender of civil liberties in the contemporary period in Manufacturing Hysteria: His point—well made—is that we are only too ready to focus on an imaginary enemy while ignoring the very real erasure of our constitutionally-guaranteed liberties.

In the detailed epilogue to the book, Feldman recounts the outrages against civil liberties and the concerted effort to stoke patriotic animosity in the most recent Bush Administration. It is fascinating, if only because the dominant narrative of 20th Century American history is one of the creation of a world power from nothing but ideals. What Feldman makes clear is that those American ideals—which it is clear he treasures—are so frequently undercut by American actions.
