It is similar to the larger Al Hamra old town but at a smaller scale. As a stop en route to somewhere else worth a short detour. Not a lot to see other than crumbling walls but knowing the story associated with it made it a short and worthwhile stop but no more.

On our way back from Nizwa our taxi driver recommended us to visit this pace. There are ruins but we were more interested in the water flowing from the wadi. The water was clear and we tried crossing the banks bare footed and it was a wonderful adventure for kids as well.

Returning back there were many 4WD vehicles who would be happy to offer you a lift for a drive to the other banks. Over all a wonderful experience. If you have lot of time, you could go and try to find this place. As the road signes are not so good in Oman, it is a bit difficult.

If you have seen already Al Hamra, and mudhouses in Nizwa and in Bahla ot ia a bit same. You could walk nicely in wadi Tanuf and it takes 2,5 h to get to the end of the wadi. So it is up to you. Heard of Tanuf as a water bottling company but didnt know there were ruins here. Visited this place as part of a day trip to Nizwa and was happy to see the place as there are not many places like this one can explore. But at the same time I was disheartened as there seems to be nothing done to keep the place from falling apart other then leaving it untouched.

A few strong showers like the one Oman experienced recently will definitely bring this place down and all that will remain will be pictures we click. If you are interested in seeing these ruins and also the ones in Birkat Al Mouz, I suggest you dont postpone your trip further.

The village itself is said to first appear in the historical record in the year , and it was once positioned near a highly-trafficked road connecting the fertile Atlantic coast with La Rioja. The village was supposedly hit by smallpox in , typhoid in , and cholera in —a series of deadly outbreaks that ravaged the population of Ochate, while the surrounding villages were supposedly unaffected. By the s the village had yet to rebound before the area was hit by the Spanish flu and several years of bad weather, destroying crops and decimating the harvest.
