A Poisoned Season (Lady Emily Mysteries Book 2)

She develops an obsession with Greek culture and literature, which she reads in Greek. In her new home, she befriends Cecile du Lac, who quickly becomes the Watson to her Sherlock. She also meets a new suitor, Colin Hargreaves. The story continues in London in the midst of a new mystery, a thief with a penchant for the belongings of Marie Antoinette. At the same time, Emily faces a personal mystery of her own. She seems to have acquired an admirer. The admirer obviously knows of her love for all things Greek, because he leaves her message after message in Greek. Colin continues to court her, with each gesture revealing how much he knows about her and loves her.

Alexander has an ability to subtly tie in historical references and norms without itfeeling forced or out of place. Emily continues to shine as we witness her personal journey. Lady Emily, despite her existence being two centuries in the past, remains a good role model for the strong female. Tasha Alexander, stays true to her fascination with European history and strong female leads, bywritingElizabeth: Queen Elizabeth I is an inspirationalleader who refuses to back down.

Unafraid to face war in order to stand up for what she believes in, she prepares to fight against King Phillip of Spain and his powerful army. He wishes to forcefully convert the entire nation of England to Catholicism. What makes this tale truly relatable are the notions of love and betrayal. As she prepares for war, the Queen falls deeply in love with Sir Walter Raleigh, but as Queen, she cannot pursue romance, as her allegiance is to her country before all else.

Despite this devotion, the Queen discovers that her most trusted advisors and family members have been plotting against her.

Her strength in the face of all of these obstacles is what makes her character lovable, strong and influential. The mystery aspect makes them impossible to put down and educates the reader at the same time. If you see one missing just send me an e-mail below. Our author of the month is Canadian author Opal Carew who writes erotic romance novels.

Opal has written over novels with multiple book series such as the Dirty Talk series and the Abducted series. Tasha Alexander Books In Order. Jack Reacher is back! Personally I thought this was the 2nd best Reacher book yet. Meanwhile, Margaret has taken up with a duke, Colin is involved investigating a pretender to the defunct throne of France, and Emily's mother is determined to see Emily married again before the Season's end.

I thought things came together much more seamlessly in this story than in the first. Emily is more sure of herself and less and less interested in what others think of her. It was a pleasure to watch her flaunt stuffy society matrons and their catty gossip in favor of learning Greek, investigating crime, and deepening her friendship with the ever-openminded agent of the crown--Colin Hargreaves.

I like how Colin never once forces Emily to do anything. I like how Emily very sensibly waits to make any permanent changes to her life before she knows her own mind on the matter. This one had a delicious ending and left me eager for the next one. Aug 08, Sheri rated it it was amazing. Then a murder occurs, one of the owners of stolen items turns up dead. Lady Emily Ashton is determined to find out who the culprit is. Also it appears that Lady Emily has a stalker, and she is beginning a romance with Colin Hargreaves.

The plot is fast paced, with a lot of twists turns and secrets. The cast of characters is large, each one has their part in the story. I really Liked Lady Emily, and some of her friends.

Murder, mystery, suspense, secrets, and a splash of romance makes for the perfect read. Mar 12, Kelly rated it liked it. Review before I really had a crack at the book: I seem to feast on the fact that I loathe sharks, unfortunate looking sharks at that, with every fiber of my being. And yet, the shark exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium are my favorites. Shark meat, shark teeth, shark fin whoops, that last one was a tad bit un-humanitarian.

And yet, I have revolting scenarios where I fall in the tank, tide pool, etc. And Review before I really had a crack at the book: And not surprisingly, this came to mind when I found how very much I am beginning to loathe this book. Ok, Tasha Alexander has redeemed herself with this one. I was unsure of her after her first.

But this one definitely has a better groove and was much easier to read. I liked the tension between she and Colin the whole way through and the mystery was much easier to follow and was interesting as well! Sep 08, Christina Startt rated it it was amazing. Colin Hargreaves just throws down the gauntlet at the end there, doesn't he? Who could say no? I liked this one just as much as the first Lady Emily book.

I love the mix of emotion and mystery, and have decided I lowkey enjoy history regarding the French Revolution. I really enjoyed the twist in this book regarding the French heir. And that fifth star is for the elusive and suave thief. Lord knows I like competition for the main hero it seems! Apr 12, Jamie rated it really liked it. The story of Lady Emily continues I love the immersion into Victorian England!!!

This story had much less plot holes than the first book, of which I totally had figured out about halfway through. This mystery left me guessing right until the very end! Oct 16, Katelyn rated it liked it Shelves: Aug 20, Kat rated it really liked it. A long lost dauphin and a splash of Ancient Greek is literally the gate to my wheelhouse. Aug 13, Jeri rated it it was ok. I had great expectations for this series as it came recommended by not one, but two people.

Hardback Editions

Slow moving and dull, but I persisted to the end in hopes it would improve. If this is any indication, I finished the book in just one day, at 4am. I really loved this book. It was very intriguing and captivating. Jun 20, Summer rated it it was amazing Shelves: Along the way I learned a bit of The Greek Anthology and was able to see Greek written out which was of course all Greek to me but was pretty to look at.

The characters are a lot of fun too! Apr 18, Bettielee rated it really liked it Shelves: This is book 2 in the Lady Emily series Drama! But Lady Emily is all up in it! And as a lady and a widow now out of mourning, she is beginning to come back into society a little. She has convinced her fellow widow and great friend, Cecille to come to England and weather the British season.

Unfortunately, she al This is book 2 in the Lady Emily series Drama! Unfortunately, she also attracts the attention of a cat burglar, one with a very narrow focus. Things are going missing from the great houses of the British Elite — items belonging to the executed Queen Marie-Antoinette. Also on the scene is a man claiming to be the long lost son of the Dauphin, who was somehow smuggled out of France and is looking to regain the throne.

One of the somewhat irritating facets of this series is that everyone is madly in love with Emily, our main character.

A Poisoned Season

Charles Berry, the man who would be King, is pissed off when she refuses his offer to make her his mistress. The cat burglar breaks into her house to leave love notes. She convinces him to do so — and only a few days after he does, his wife shows up, saying he is now dead and accusing Emily of being his mistress! Not only is Mr. Francis dead, but so is his valet. Poison was involved and Mrs. She throws herself into this, drinking port, and involving herself with less than savory characters and shocking everyone.

Enter a few bitches: Biggest bitch is Lord Fortescue. This requires a mentor, and his mentor loathes Emily and her independent ways. He tells her she needs a husband to take her in hand. I wanna push him down some stairs. There are also gossips bent on tearing Emily down. Sadly, the bon ton start spreading rumors that Emily is toying with him also. So much drama and scandal! But he was around. And madly in love with her. Also, her best friend Ivy is turning into a Stepford Wife, and their relationship is in peril.

Again there were lots of red herrings, a bit of confusion, a lot of predictability, too many characters, and none of them were anything other than white and rich. There is no diversity at all. But I really enjoyed this. It is a guilty pleasure, which I will continue to read. I own all the books…. Apr 04, Ana T. After her love story with her husband in the first book, Lady Emily is now a widow whose main interest is to pursue her Greek studies, to help the British Museum to enlarge their collection of works of art, to spend some time with her chosen friends and to continue her relationship with Colin Hargreaves.

I liked this Emily even more than the one in the first book. I thought it interesting that the main plot was about a pretender to the throne of France. I could just imagine everyone trying to gain his good graces just in case the monarchy is restored and the Bourbons reclaim their birthright. While society is busy throwing balls in the honor of the supposed French heir, objects known to have belonged to the late Marie Antoinette are being stolen from their rightful owners.

All these entanglements lead to some vicious gossip that threatens to harm her place in society. Besides enjoying Emily as a character, I also really enjoyed her relationship with Colin. He is not always present, in fact, one could say that he is always there when she needs him but he never overwhelms her or her investigations.

He respects her intelligence and her resourcefulness and he is determined to woo her and marry her when she feels ready, not before. I also like how Alexander manages to convey us to the Victorian world. The action does progress slowly but I thought that fitted the story very well, a more rushed story could not have such subtle or intellectual references or they would be lost.

See a Problem?

Not only is Mr. I liked this Emily even more than the one in the first book. Still he also joins the chorus of people nagging Ivy about when she will have an heir. Other books in the series. As far as the complementary leading male is concerned, I suppose I do like Colin too, even though so far he seems a bit too… good and honorable. After I read the first, I didn't think I would be too interested to continue but I was willing to give the series a second shot. A good 3 stars story.

This was the right pace to appreciate all the details involved. The mystery part was interesting and surprising but I think the book is mostly about Emily.

Jul 12, Andree rated it really liked it Shelves: I really enjoyed this one. After finishing the first one, I suspected I'd really enjoy this one more than I enjoyed the first one.

Also loved Margaret and Jeremy's fake courtship to essentially get both of their families of their backs.

That was inspired, and pretty much delightful. Actually, given that Jeremy was set up as a romantic rival of sorts for Colin, he was surprisingly excellent. The interpersonal dynamics were really spot on, I have to say.

Tasha Alexander

Even Emily's mother was surprisingly awesome in this. She reminded me of Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey at one point. Really enjoyed the show of family loyalty.

A POISONED SEASON

A Poisoned Season has ratings and reviews. I had some expectations regarding book 2 of Lady Emily Ashton's mysteries and I am happy to say that. Editorial Reviews. From Publishers Weekly. When Lady Emily Ashton, an unconventional young widow, comes to London for the social season at the start of.

Could have done with a little less Emily-has-to-endure-a-society-scandal though. Continue to really enjoy Cecile. She has a great way of subtly giving Emily necessary advice whether it's followed or not is another matter. I enjoy that Emily has a butler who supports her so wholeheartedly. And he trusts her. I really like how they are together. Writers of historical romance, this is a way of doing it right. I mean, I know that the author has created a unique set of circumstances to give the female protagonist more freedom than she normally would have in this society, making the situation more relatable to a modern audience though not quite as much freedom as she thought , but surely this isn't the only way of creating similar circumstances?

Without resorting to the female lead being often inadvertently "compromised" somehow, neccessitating a marriage. I did figure out the "villain" almost immediately, and I did find that the resolution of the Isabelle problem her eloping with Lord Pembroke to Gretna Greene a little convenient, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the story.

Like I said in my review of this first book of this series, And Only to Deceive, I absolutely love this series. I have re-read the books several times and always look forward to a new one being published. Tasha Alexander has created wonderful characters, and it is impossible not to fall in love with them. Especially Colin, who may very well be the perfect man. This is my favorite book of the series so far, and one of my favorite books of all time. I love the way Emily and Colin butt heads as fa Like I said in my review of this first book of this series, And Only to Deceive, I absolutely love this series.

I love the way Emily and Colin butt heads as far as the detective side of the story goes. There are a couple of hilarious interactions! Colin does not like the thought of Emily putting herself in danger, and Emily doesn't like being told what do do. I understand her desire for independence, believe me. Her strong head is one of the best things about her The mystery in this one is just as captivating as in the first novel, if not more so.

Who is stealing Marie Antoinette collectibles? Who is sneaking into Emily's bedroom in the dead of night and leaving her creepy notes and flowers? What intelligent-but-reckless thing will Emily do next to try to solve the mystery? Will Colin have a heart attack from worry? Possibly my favorite scene from any book. I want to blab, I really do.

I want to tell you what happens because I know you would all swoon with me. Suffice it to say, it is romantic and involves books. Read this series, you absolutely won't regret it! May 02, Bookworm rated it really liked it Shelves: While the big gossip of the season is surrounding the purported heir to the French throne, Lady Emily Ashton is still attracting attention.

She is still studying Greek, still refusing to remarry, still drinking port, and still intent on being her own person even as she faces society's censure, troubles with her best friend, multiple proposals, a dashing thief, and a murderer. The characters are the most important part of this story so I will start with them I'm afraid that Summary: The characters are the most important part of this story so I will start with them I'm afraid that I'm assuming you've read the first book and are familiar with them.

Emily is still lovely and Colin still sounds hot. He is very determined to marry her and a bet around that emerges. My personal favorite character is Davis, her butler. I love him and am very jealous of that French tart Odette who captures his attention. Cecile is not in this book as much but Ivy and her marital problems move closer to the front. On to the mystery. Throughout the story Emily is threatened by some very bad people.

First there is Charles Berry, claiming to be the heir to the French throne, who believes he is irresistible to women. Then there is a mysterious thief who brazenly breaks in to her house and follows her. I did not quite unravel the threads of the mystery. There is involvement by a person who I did not suspect because I am far too trusting of fictional characters. I felt it was more substantial than the mystery of the first book though.

I'm hoping to read the rest of the series over the summer! December - A Poisoned Season 9 8 Jan 08, June 17, 59 37 Jun 21, The daughter of two philosophy professors, I grew up surrounded by books.
