Multiplication Tables (1x through 12x)

Multiplication Tips and Tricks

Elsewhere on this site, I gave some general times tables tips. On this page, we'll zoom in on the twelve times table. You can use this page to show your kids the hidden patterns in the twelve times table, and make it easier for them to learn.

If you can somehow get you kids to find these patterns for themselves, they'll remember them much longer than if you simply point the patterns out to them. I've put the twelve times table below. By the way, this site also has some free printable times table charts for you to download, including the 12 times table.

Certainly the addition is easy enough for the first four rows in the table. The pattern in the ones digits continues forever: What's 11 times 5?

Notice I put the 5 twice. What's 11 times 6? I didn't want to mess with you like that. Of course, it's You just repeat the number twice. Let me switch colors. Now what's 11 times 12?

Oh sorry, I skipped You might want to say it's 1, So that little pattern that we had where you just repeat the number, that only worked for one-digit numbers. So it only worked for 1 through 9. Well, we could think about it a couple of ways. We can add 11 to So we can say it's 99 plus That's equal to And I'm going to show you how to do-- well, hopefully you've already watched the video on how to add two-digit numbers like this, but that's Or you could just use the property from the 10's times tables that we learned where if you just take 11 times 10 you add a 0 to the 11, you get That's the 11 right there.

Finally, let's do 11 times No easy way to remember this, you just kind of should remember it. Or you could say look, it's going to be 11 more than 11 times-- sorry.

Multiplying by 12 by Breaking it Down

I keep skipping things. We should do 11 times 11 first. Let me make sure this is clear. We're doing 11 times 11 before we go to 11 times So 11 times 11 is going to be 11 more than 11 times So we add 11 to this. And actually, as you'll see, there actually is an order as we get to higher multiples of 11, but I'll leave that to a future video.

Twelve Times Table Tips

And then finally, we're at 11 times And we could add 11 to itself twelve times. We could add 12 to itself eleven times. Or we could just say, hey, is going to be 11 more than 11 times So that is what? You add 11 to this. What do you get? I just added plus 11 and then got Now the other way you could have said it is, well, what's 10 times 12?

Breaking Down 12

We already knew that. So 11 times 12 because we're multiplying 12 by one more should be 12 more than that. So that should be So two ways to get the exact same answer. All right, now let's do our 12 times tables.

And once you know this you are ready to tackle any type of multiplication problem. But we'll do that in future videos. So 12 times 0. Now it gets interesting. We're going to increase by 12 every time.

Let me rewrite that. Or we could write that as 12 times 2.

Multiplying Feet and Inches

I see my brain is doing the wrong things. We could rewrite that as 12 times 2 plus Or we could rewrite that as 24 plus Either way, all of these get us to And notice, that's just that plus Have considered just doubling the entire number. Add the 6 of 68 to 34 for the answer 40, to which you add the 8. Double 6 to 12 and end up with Add the 7 to and attach the 2 for the answer You are teaching these good methods ; but it is from right to left.

This is so complicated for such a simple task.
