Total Eclipse

Your guide to future total solar eclipses

You can see a complete list of the upcoming solar eclipses on NASA's website , which provides information about solar eclipses, including detailed maps of each eclipse path.

What is a total solar eclipse?

The first solar eclipse of the year will be of the partial variety, which means that the moon will block only a portion of the sun. During a partial solar eclipse, it looks as though the moon is taking a "bite" out of the sun's disk. It will start near Beijing and slowly move northeast toward Alaska, where only the state's westernmost islands will be able to see the eclipse before the sun sets.

The table below shows the times when the eclipse will reach its maximum for a few major cities, as well as the maximum obscuration, or the percentage of the sun's disk that will be covered by the moon. Nearly two years after the Great American Solar Eclipse of , the world will once again have a chance to experience totality, when the moon completely blocks the sun, turning day into night as its mile-wide kilometers shadow moves across the surface of the Earth.

Other parts of South America will be able to see a partial eclipse.

Most of this eclipse will be happening over the Pacific Ocean, where the partial eclipse starts at This total solar eclipse will have a longer duration than last year's total solar eclipse, with totality lasting up to 4 minutes and 33 seconds. However, this maximum duration may be visible only to observers on a few boats and airplanes, because it will be happening over the Pacific Ocean.

It will reach the coast of Chile near the city of La Serena at 4: Greatest duration is again around 2 minutes. But probably the only options for viewing will be via aircraft or possibly via ships willing to brave the Southern Ocean. This is what is known as a hybrid eclipse. That means that along part of the center path of the eclipse, it is a total eclipse, but on the ends of the path, it is an annular eclipse.

Partial solar eclipse on Jan. 5-6

A solar eclipse occurs when an observer (on Earth) passes through the shadow cast by the Moon which fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can only. In , skywatchers in a few select locations on Earth will have three opportunities to see a solar eclipse, a celestial event in which the moon.

Annular eclipses occur when the Moon is farther from Earth in its orbit causing the Moon to not completely block out the Sun. During the peak of an annular eclipse an annulus, or ring, of the Sun is visible all the way around the Moon. Though interesting, an annular eclipse is not nearly as dramatic as a total eclipse. For the hybrid eclipse, the path of totality passes over East Timor, and islands of eastern Indonesia, and the seas and oceans nearby.

The maximum duration of totality is 1 minute and 16 seconds. In my perusal of the interactive Google maps created by NASA for upcoming eclipses I looked at where the path of totality for this eclipse barely crosses the Northwestern corner of Australia, and I found an interesting Random Space Fact. Where the path of totality crosses Australia, for example at Exmouth on the North West Cape peninsula, the duration of totality will be approximately one second.

In , totality returns to North America. It crosses Mexico and then goes through Texas including Dallas, and works its way through several states to Maine, then crosses eastern Canada. Maximum duration of totality will be about four and a half minutes. April cloudiness may cause problems, particularly in the Northeast. This eclipse begins in north central Russia, passes over the north polar region and Greenland, reaches a greatest duration of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over Western Iceland, then ends in northern Spain low in the sky near Sunset.

Greatest duration of totality is particularly long at 6 minutes and 22 seconds occurring in Egypt near Luxor, which would certainly make a spectacular and historically intriguing place from which to observe. This eclipse begins over the Indian Ocean, crossing the Cocos Keeling Islands and Christmas Island before reaching a maximum duration of 5 minutes and 9 seconds in northern Australia.

It then crosses to eastern Australia, passing directly over Sydney with a duration of about three and a half minutes, and then proceeds across southern New Zealand and into the South Pacific Ocean. So there you have it, all of the total solar eclipses visible from the surface of the Earth through the end of the s. I hope you are able to go see some and have clear weather.

Have fun eclipse chasing! The moon orbits about , miles , kilometers from Earth, and that's just the right distance to appear the same size in the sky as the sun, which is significantly larger and much farther away.

Solar eclipse

The moon and the sun line up and create total solar eclipses only about once every 18 months. On average, two to five solar eclipses occur each year, but these don't always result in total eclipses. The solar eclipse that will cross the continental U. That will happen because the moon will be at a point in its orbit that is too far from Earth to completely block out the sun from our perspective here on Earth.

While it will still be a fantastic celestial event, the annular eclipse won't darken the skies the way a total solar eclipse will. Within the eclipse's path of totality, spectators can expect their senses to come alive. As the total solar eclipse approaches, there will be a gradual dimming of the sky.

He had no more conception of the scientific explanation of these phenomena than the chicken has of the scientific explanation of an eclipse. To a chicken a solar eclipse is the same thing as nightfall, and he goes to roost accordingly. Viewers will notice a more obvious change if they're wearing protective eyewear: They'll see the moon's round outline slowly block more and more of the sun, at first making it look like a fat banana, and later, more like a ring. As the moon continues to move across the face of the sun's disk, it will get cooler all around.

Plants and animals will start to react , and the sounds of nocturnal creatures might start up. During the few minutes of totality — and only then — spectators can remove their protective eyewear and stare at the ethereal halo of the sun's corona. Make sure to take a moment to look for stars or planets shining in the dim sky, and enjoy the degree sunset that the total eclipse produces.

Keep an eye out for lunar mountains and solar flares, too, which may be visible at the moon's edges. The solar eclipse first makes landfall in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, then travels from Texas to Maine in the U. The eclipse finishes its North American journey over Newfoundland in Canada.

Skygazers will have a plethora of options to choose from when selecting where to view totality. According to an interactive Google map developed by Fred Espenak, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and an eclipse modeler, and astrophotographer Xavier Jubier, an astrophotographer, the total solar eclipse will first touch North America off Mexico's Pacific Coast, and the lunar shadow will progress in a northeast direction. In Illinois, the town of Carbondale eagerly awaits its second total solar eclipse in seven years.

Canada also boasts several viewing sites, as the shadow's path will sweeps eastward to Newfoundland. Outside the path of totality, skywatchers in Mexico, the U. Here, the moon will appear to take a smooth bite out of the sun's disk.
