The introductory chapter presents an overview of migration patterns in Europe since World War II, the complex issues relating to ethnic minorities, and policy issues in the context of European integration.

Each of the country chapters follows a similar structure: This similarity in structure is helpful to the reader in making comparisons among the different countries. The concluding chapter is excellent in attempting to compare the migration experiences of the 25 countries discussed by presenting a typology of these experiences based on past migration experience, current migration patterns, and policies and size of the immigrant population. The countries are grouped into five categories based on these criteria: Recent hosts include those countries that have transitioned from countries of emigration to countries of immigration in the late s and s.
