Offspring (The Sword of the Dragon Book 2)

It is a hybrid style between the action packed cinematic writing of R. A Salvatore, and the morality of J. Perfect for sitting in the living room and reading after a hard day at work. The story may be considered Christian, but the story would appeal to anyone who loves a great fantasy book well told. I don't want to spoil the story!

Overall I believe we have another great fantasy writer in the making. Do yourself a favor and pick up a Scott Appleton book! Overall, I give this book 5 stars out of 5! The book is available in print, and for major eReaders. Jun 13, Christie Hagerman rated it it was amazing.

This is Book 2 of The Sword of the Dragon series, and since I came in late to this one, it took me a few chapters to make sense of all the characters. We meet villains in a battle between good and evil forces on the first page, with traitors complicating the fight. As a result of this treason, a curse is handed down.

The Dragon's Son

We go through most of the book before this curse comes into play, so if you're confused by that part, it helped me to go back and read it again after finishing the book. If you read This is Book 2 of The Sword of the Dragon series, and since I came in late to this one, it took me a few chapters to make sense of all the characters. If you read the first book, you'll get this from the start. As the story progressed, enough was explained that I now understand what I missed, but I was a bit lost at first.

The cast of characters is diverse, from the father Ilfedo who inadvertently becomes ruler of the Hemmed Lands, to his sisters-in-law who help raise his daughter. The grief of losing his wife is at times too heavy for Ilfedo, but these women and his old friends stand beside him with loyalty befitting the now royal family.

The battles are intense--dark forces oppressing the innocent until the light breaks through. The creatures are original--dark bird-men, a powerful dragon, talking serpents, monstrous megatraths, to name a few. The heroes are truly heroic--selflessly sacrificing for their loved ones and their people. And in the center of it all is a princess who grows into a young woman, proving her capability in battle, her wisdom in decision-making, and her kindness in relationships.

This is an epic tale, one that I will definitely be sharing with my teen daughters and recommending for any fantasy lovers. Jul 22, Jennifer rated it it was amazing. Scott Appleton has definitely put his own mark in the fantasy genre, with new and exciting ideas, worlds, and creatures. He is in his own league, he sets him self apart from authors like Lewis and Tolkien, which is really refreshing because a lot of fantasy christian authors are compared to those two, as well as a lot of Lewis' and Tolkien's ideas and mythologies are used by other authors.

Whereas Appleton does not compare, and he has created his own mythology which is absolutely seamless and beautiful. This book has something for everyone, action, adventure, romance, and amazing christian themes. This is a must read series. Dec 06, Atticgirl rated it really liked it. Offspring is packed with action, adventure, and suspense.

The author uses rich language to describe the classic struggle of good and evil. His creation of the Megatraths and the mysterious entity trying to control Ilfedo adds to the adventure and suspense. My twelve year old son was very impressed by the story line, characters, and the action-packed plot. Though we both agree that it would have been a little easier to follow the characters if we had the background from the first book.

We plan on Offspring is packed with action, adventure, and suspense. We plan on going back and reading the first book soon. I was pleasantly surprised that this book kept my son occupied for at least two full weeks. He usually devours books in a couple of days. But the complicated twists and turns of this novel we don't want to give away any spoilers slowed him down and made him really think about what was going on in the story.

It takes mom a lot longer to read a book of that size with a tot at home Although this is written with a Christian perspective, it is not preachy and is subtle in its subtext. Definitely a must read for fantasy fans who enjoy a great story with well-described characters that feel like they are right there with you. Thank you Scott Appleton for providing me with a copy to review.

I may not be the best person to write a review, because overall this was a neutral read - not boring, but not particularly engaging. I will only pick up the next in the series because overall it's more enjoyable than not finding anything else to read. This book is a good way to pass an afternoon, but not enough to buy a copy for my shelf. Nov 19, Josh rated it liked it.

I liked this book more than the previous. It was a decent story not muddled with some of the garbage from the previous.

Although it was still missing "something" for me. It didn't leave me wondering "what's going to happen next?! I'm going to listen to the next book simply because I would like to see where everything is going and because there is only one book left in the trilogy why not. Feb 23, Sasha Strader rated it really liked it Shelves: Pretty darned good book, though I am aggravated that such an author as Weis would result to the same "plot twist" twice.

Namely someone being beaten "to death", Draconas thinking they're dead, and then finding out they aren't. The "man" is supposed to be several hundred years old! I think he'd be a little smarter. Mar 11, Emily rated it it was amazing. Reading about each of the sons of Melisande was fascinating. Again, something Weis does excellently is create characters that she is not afraid to let fail.

I found myself hoping that a certain character who is believed to be dead at the end of this book is not actually dead. I wait with dread to see what becomes of the man and woman who escape together at the end of this book. Sep 08, Kara rated it really liked it Shelves: Better than the first! The twist at the end had me completely floored Also, the main characters were more developed in this book than in the last, especially Ven.

The only thing that sucked was that everyone was so sad for a lot of the book. Hopefully in the next book, things will start to look up! On to the next! Sep 08, Kara rated it really liked it. Sep 29, Marco rated it liked it Shelves: I enjoyed the book but the themes suddenly changed from the previous book. There is almost no mention of the intense love of Bellona and Melisande, almost as if the author was afraid to have risked too much in the previous book. This is a little disappointing.

Oct 09, Brian rated it it was amazing. Margaret Weis, while one of the greatest sci-fi novelists of all time, definatly has trouble with the 2nd novels in her series'. This is once again a good informational filler novel but could have been a bit deeper on the plot. Apr 19, Rhianna rated it really liked it Recommends it for: I really liked this book. It's the first fantasy book that I've read and really liked.

It was a bit confusing but I blame that on myself considering I didn't even notice that it was the second book in the series. I read this book in Dutch So, this book is an improvement over the first in every way. I feel as though this is where the story actually begins.

The characters are more diverse and better defined. I enjoyed this book. No interest in getting the rest of the trilogy. Characters never really attracted me, and even a bit of a twist at the end left me utterly uninterested in the outcome. I hope others like it better. Sep 01, Amanda Hamilton rated it liked it. Degenerated into a complete mess by the end. What on earth happened from Book 1 to this mess?

And, needless to say, Book 3 ain't happening. Jan 22, Amber rated it it was ok. Though the story line is intriguing, it is too violent and sexual for me. Paperback Editions

I love a nice hardcover edition! Which I know many of you collectors out there will appreciate. Audiobooks will come last. I know I have been promising audiobooks for a couple of years now, and tying the new design to e-book, paperback, hardcover, and audiobook will make everything easier to find in search engines and sites.

When AMG published my second novel their buyers objected to the cover art that I had commissioned for it. It was absolutely stunning. A depiction of Oganna kneeling in the cave when she lifts her sword Avenger and her blade boomerang out of the stone floor. Now, at last, I can release the Offspring cover as I wanted you to see it with that artwork! A subtle but important title change.

Over the next couple of months I will start releasing these new editions, beginning with Swords of the Six. For you, my readers, this means my novels will become unavailable for a little while. During this transition the new editions of The Sword of the Dragon novels will be designed and prepped for publication.
