I have been able to discover almost no other biographical details about him, nor have I found any of his short stories that have been translated into English. I picked up this small collection of his works primarily to practice my Italian, and I found myself captivated by them. This is a collection of eight Emilio De Marchi lived his entire life in Milan, working as an author and translator.

This is a collection of eight short stories, all written in Italian. Exquisitely sensitive to the impression they are making on those around them, they are easily flustered and unable to be mutually supportive. The crisis comes when the husband leaves his new wife in their hotel room in order to take a short walk, after which he is unable to locate their room, necessitating his admitting to his hosts that he is lost, an episode that goes down in local lore as the story of the honeymooner who lost his room and his wife. The rich man finds a fine match for his daughter and hosts a magnificent wedding.

Later an unwanted and horrifying wedding gift arrives. Joining them, he listens as they relate their finding of the drowned lunatic whose legs he notices extending grotesquely toward the fire. He is sent to choose between two very young girls, sisters and orphans, who are cared for by their widowed aunt. When he meets with the aunt he realizes that she is his old love, who, while he was away fighting in the war, married a rich older man to save her destitute family from starvation. Feelings are mutually rekindled, and the story is told with sensitivity, gentleness, and grace.

This modest little collection of stories was a joy to read and vehicle for seeing into the lives of generally common lives of more than a century ago.
